Method

A heating degree day total adds up, day by day, how far the mean temperature falls below a base temperature. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center describes degree days as an index of the energy needed to heat or cool buildings, so a higher value means more heating demand at that station.

Each value is the station's annual normal from NOAA's U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020 (annual/seasonal) dataset. The station is the nearest one with an annual heating degree day normal, found within a search box around the city's place point in the U.S. Census Bureau Gazetteer.

Cities are listed alphabetically, not ranked. A value describes its station, not the whole city.

  • No statewide value is computed: a few stations cannot describe a whole state.
  • Values are not normalized, weighted or ranked.
  • A heating degree day normal is not a count of freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Distances run from each city's Gazetteer place point to the station.
  • Station names are NOAA's, without the state and country code. The NOAA variable is ANN-HTDD-NORMAL.
